A Blogger’s Guide To Branding Stock Photography

March 11, 2015 By Dre Beltrami 31 Comments

A Guide To Branding Stock Photography

The only thing more annoying than the hunt for royalty free stock photos is how vanilla they can be. They’re meant to be a ‘one size fits all’ visual resource. Now, while that sounds great in theory, it’s far from reality.

There’s one critical element of visual content that’s not taken into account in this train of thought. Style! Take jeans for example. How many of us wear the same kind of jeans, let alone the same way?

You’ve got:

➽The skin tight, wiggle yourself in them fit.
➽The hip hop, 4 sizes too big, sag off your ass fit.
➽The form fitting country crooner fit.
➽The high rise, pleated mom fit.

You get the point.

One person’s perfect fit is another person’s fashion nightmare. Our preferred styles of jean, the way we wear them, and the items we pair with them is dictated by our personal style.

Versatility is one of the reasons jeans have remained a wardrobe staple for decades now. They’re a staple that bridges cultures, body types and social class, but they certainly aren’t a one size fits all kind of thing — something any parent who has tried to buy jeans for their teenager has learned real quickly.

Alright, so I’ve gone off on a bit of a tangent. It happens. Let’s circle this back around to style deficient stock photos.

Stock photos are the jeans of visual content. Using stock photography is one thing, seamlessly branding stock photography so it blends with your overall brand look and style is a whole other. It’s the difference between an image and an image that oozes signature style. [Read more…]

A Blogger’s Guide To Creating A Branded Watermark

February 25, 2015 By Dre Beltrami 39 Comments

A Blogger's Guide To Creating A Branded Watermark

Gone are the days that watermarks are only for photographers protecting their images. These days knowing how to watermark your images is crucial for anyone creating visual content. Why is that?

There are 3 MAJOR benefits of watermarking blog images:

➽It’s a unique identifier that builds brand recognition
➽It can elevate the perceived quality of your visuals {if done right}
➽It can ensure you get credit when those thieving trolls strike

The easy {but incredibly stale} way of watermarking a photo is simply adding your url or brand name via text somewhere on your image.

The problem with that is that you don’t foster brand recognition OR elevate the perceived quality of your content.

And let’s be honest, it’s really easy to crop out a line of text from an image, so the watermark is easy to eliminate.

Rather than wasting your time with stale and ineffective ways of watermarking, I want to show you 5 ways you can create a branded watermark for your images so you’ll get all the benefits mentioned above. [Read more…]

8 Visual Design Mistakes That Plague Most Non-Designers

February 11, 2015 By Dre Beltrami 37 Comments

8 Types Of Visual Diarrhea That Plague DIYers

With the wide open opportunity for DIYers and newbies to create their own visual content these days comes the rampant creation of visual diarrhea.

It’s nothing to beat yourself up about! Like anything new, you just need to dedicate time to learning how to avoid the most common visual design mistakes.

One of the first parts of visual content mastery you need to focus on is how to avoid creating cringe worthy visuals.

You know, those visuals that scream AMATEUR. The ones that you can immediately label, regardless of your design prowess, low quality. The ones you’d’ rather rip out your eyes than be subjected to looking at. Ok, ok, so I’m getting a smidge dramatic.

The point is, visuals create the pause you need to get someone to stop long enough to take notice and open the proverbial door to deeper exploration. If your visuals make someone’s eyeballs run in the opposite direction the only thing you can look forward to is being doorbell ditched. [Read more…]

How To Use Fonts Effectively: A Non-Designers Guide

February 4, 2015 By Dre Beltrami 45 Comments

A Non-Designer's Guide to Using Fonts Effectively

While the power of pictorial storytelling is magical we’ve got a long way to go before text is extinct.

Which means you better learn how to use fonts effectively in your visuals or you’re going to be looking straight down the barrel of obscurity.

TYPEFACE vs. FONT

Right out of the gate I need to clarify a common mistake.

The correct term to use when describing lettering is ‘typeface’ and not ‘font’.

Typeface is the actual character set. {i.e. Arial, Times New Roman, Century Gothic, etc}

Font is the specific size and style of a typeface.

For example: While Arial, is the typeface, Arial 10pt bold is the font. [Read more…]

A Blogger's Guide To Branding Images

Blog images are to websites what the yellow brick road was to Oz.

They’re not just a visual partner to your text, they’re a visually recognizable path to your solutions.

Recreating the wheel for each blog image will cost you brand recognition and turn the path back to your brand into a dead end.

The art of creating a branding blog images doesn’t require a sophisticated level of complexity. It really boils down to consistency and signature style.

8 Visual Strategies To Super Charge Your YouTube Channel

Gas stations are to cars, what YouTube is to business.

The truth is…

If your not using YouTube to share your informational octane you’re a damn fool!

BUT, if that shamefully honest lashing isn’t convincing enough, here are a couple stats that should do the trick. [Read more…]
